Day 84: You Are Redeemed

“For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God” (1 Peter 1:18-21, NIV).

The idea of redemption is showing up in order to retrieve something that is already yours. When we aren’t referring to Christ’s redemption, we most hear this word used in terms of coupons or gift cards. These items are something that was purchased by someone in order to be used or to be bestowed upon someone else as a gift.

Jesus was the sacrifice, dying on a cross as a payment for our sins. God already gave up the most precious thing to Him in order to give us freedom. Jesus showed up to fulfill that redemption. The price had been paid, but Jesus then rose from the grave so that He might retrieve our souls, so to speak. I think the biggest thing I took away from this study was this: God did not stop at the minimum but went on to fulfill not just the payment, but the full redemption.

“For [God] has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins” (Colossians 1:13-14, NIV). You are redeemed.
