Day 12: You Are Commissioned

“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age’” (Matthew 28:18-20, NIV).

This is one of the most well-known passages of the Bible, and yet as Believers, I feel like we can get so calloused to the truths held in these few verses. This is the last time Jesus is ever seen on earth and it began the wait for the Holy Spirit to come. I think we forget the significance of this.

The other day, I came across a question that someone asked a Pastor on Instagram: “How are we to spend our days now that we have nothing to do?” If I am honest, I don’t recall what the pastor’s reply was (that’s sort of sad… I should remember these things), but it got me thinking.

If you are like me, you may feel trapped where you are at times, unable to even leave home. But now, more than ever, we have access to talk about Christ and share what we believe. Social media affords us this option. Being kind to someone in temporary need affords us this opportunity. How seriously are we taking this?

The church’s mission has not changed. Ever since Jesus came about 2,000 years ago, the call of the Body of Christ has remained constant. It doesn’t matter what denomination we fall under, or our political affiliation, or whether we go to a small church where you know everyone versus a megachurch and know only a few other families. That is NOT what defines us.

A few different people have talked to me recently about leaving one ministry for another and them feeling badly about doing so. But really, if they are following God and chasing after the Spirit, then that is where they are supposed to be! For those who are wholeheartedly seeking after God, then our identity as a church needs to be Christ.

We have been called to make disciples of all nations.

We are called to baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

We are called to teach them to obey everything Jesus taught his disciples to do.

And this, this is our true work. There should be no sides in Christianity. We have our convictions that help us stand united. Put aside your opinions. Stop focusing on details that are not laid out in the Bible and crucial for Salvation and then arguing about them. Discussions and debates can be encouraging and deepen our faith, but they should never divide us. Stand firm in Christ. We have been commissioned.
