Day 58: You Are Anxious

Through a powerful Bible study I had with a group last year, I learned that there are 366 verses in the Bible that address the idea of fear. Over and over again, Jesus Himself turned to the people around Him and said “Do not be afraid.” As interesting as that might be, I found it even more interesting that this phrase is often followed by “for I am with you.”

God could choose to put any phrase behind “Do not be afraid.” He could have talked about healing, or Him making everything perfect for us. But instead, He assures us of who He is and that He is with us.

If I am honest, there are a lot of things that can cause us to be worried and anxious, to be afraid. We can be afraid of what will happen if quarantine ends too soon or what will happen if it goes on for way too long. We can worry about the injustices of this world and how the protests are becoming riots. We can be anxious about health concerns or job losses or if tomorrow we wake up and the whole world is different.

“The Lord is my light and my salvation — whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1, NIV). Instead of letting fear and doubt and worry consume us, Philippians 4:6 commands us to “in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God” (NIV).

Although our natural inclinations would be to be anxious, we have the choice to give it up to God. Give those anxieties over to the Lord our God, the only One who has the power to change what we cannot.
