I remember back in my high school chemistry class, we had to weigh some copper wire on these scales sitting in the back of the room for an experiment. Everyone in the class had to go two or three at a time, one at each scale, until everyone was done. The only instruction we were given was this: Do not touch the little grey button on the side of the scale. Inevitably, however, at least one person hit the little grey button on the side and my teacher had to go and “fix” the scale.
I came to understand later on that this button recalibrated the entire scale, programming it to believe that the weight of whatever was the new “zero”. If there was even a fraction of difference from the original setting, the weight recorded for the copper wire would be incorrect and the data would be skewed. In order to fix it, my chemistry teacher had to reprogram the scale to know what true zero was (in this case, the weight of the beaker so only the wire was weighed).
In our walk with Jesus, we need to remember that He is first and foremost. When we sin against God, the weight of our sin is already measured and too much for us to pay the price. However, God is counting us clean because of Christ’s sacrificial death on the cross (Romans 2:16).
I think that too often, we as the church try to rearrange what is okay and what is not okay in terms of sin. We hit the metaphorical button in our walks with God in order to trick others (and even ourselves) into believing that our sin weighs less than it actually does. But God knows the true weight of our trespasses, and He is not fooled.
We have to stop pretending that other people’s sins are worse than ours. We have to stop believing that we are worse off than others. I know those things are sort of opposites of each other, but we have tendencies to either be too proud or feel inferior. The truth is, sin is sin. I am only writing this because I know it’s something I struggle with, and because of the grace of God, others have opened up to me about their struggles with this as well.
We need to remember that all wrongs against God are not paid by us, but God’s wrath is satisfied through Jesus Christ (1 Thessalonians 5:1-11). We don’t determine how much our sin weighs, and we can’t even see it clearly the way God does. We need to let go of the world’s earthly expectations of us and get back to God’s standards. You are calibrated.
