Looking through different passages tonight, I found one that I am not sure I really understood when I read it before. At the end of the Book of Jonah, we see God love the people of Ninevah and show them mercy. Jonah prays, “I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity” (Jonah 4:2b, NIV).
I guess I always believed that God was set on destroying Ninevah; after all, they deserved it. In my mind, He was carrying out something that ought to have been done way before. And yet, because the Ninevites showed they were sorry enough, God then changed His mind. But tonight, I read this passage very differently.
2 Peter 3:9 says, “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some of you understand slowness. Instead, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (NIV).
Expect God to show up because He wants us to know Him. We should want others to come to Him. May we live in a way that helps others seek Christ the way He found us out before we knew of Him. He sought us out and loved us regardless of who we were or what we had done. You are cherished.
