There was once a chief who was head of a nomadic village in the mountains. The men were hunters who travelled by foot and killed their prey with spears. One day, while the group was out hunting, the son of the chief wandered off and was separated from the rest of the group. When they came back and reported this to the chief, many tears were shed. “The gods must be angry with you,” some of the villagers suggested. “What do we know of these things?” asked the chief.
A few days later, the young man finally found the new campsite, excitedly telling everyone that he had found a head of wild horses. Immediately, the villagers built fences and gathered grass to prepare. They then set out and corralled the horses to tame them and use them for hunting. “The gods must be pleased with us for us to be so blessed!” claimed some of the people. But even in the rejoicing, the Chief still declared, “What do we know of these things?”
The wild horses were more challenging to tame than expected. Many of the horses were angry and constantly running around the pens. And one day, while the chief’s son was breaking a horse, he broke his leg when he was thrown off of it. “How unfortunate, the gods must be angry with him,” the people muttered under their breath. The chief addressed these words by saying, “Well, what do we know of these things?”
A week later, while the son was still healing, a warring tribe burst into the village. They burned down the straw huts, took the horses that were tamed, and captured all of the able-bodied young men. In mourning, the rest of the tribe gathered together, collected the remnants of their belongings, and moved to the next camp location. Since the chief’s son was still unable to walk, however, he had been left behind. Grumbling, the villagers argued, “What did the chief do to deserve keeping his son when all of us have lost ours!” But the chief just shook his head and replied, “My people, what do we know of these things?”
And so, the moral of the story is this: what do we know of these things? One thing happens and we are convinced that we are either blessed or cursed by a higher being. But another thing happens and we are then convinced of just the opposite. When something happens, perhaps we should not be so quick to judge and determine a situation’s goodness or devastation.
I would love to give credit to whoever that story belongs to, however I only ever heard it by word of mouth; I have no idea who even told me the tale.
But where is our focus? In several verses of the Bible, we can read about the Lord’s Will. In Matthew 6, Jesus teaches us to pray “[God’s] will be done as it is in Heaven.” Jesus shows us what that looks like when He knowingly is captured and crucified; although He begged the Father to take the cup of suffering away from Him (Luke 22:42), Jesus still submitted to the God’s will. Even Jesus was not exempt of suffering, both physically and spiritually.
I was talking to a friend earlier this week, and I was just trying to explain that while I am no longer angry at, I still struggle a lot with why I am struggling with my autoimmune. In the past few months, I just feel like I have a lot of questions. I find it challenging to see other people’s lives and comparing myself with how they get to live. And that is honestly how I see it. I really feel as if my life has been suspended in a time warp that has left me back before I was first injured because of my autoimmune.
I guess I get tired of people saying things like, “You really need to make good use of these years because you are in your prime now…” Things like that bother me because I feel as if I have lost those years. So many others are off to achieve the greatest accomplishments in their lives while I feel so stuck just trying to figure out whether or not I am going to be able to walk first thing in the morning.
I think that is why I struggle most with questioning what I am going through. But it’s not just looking at what other people’s lives. It’s looking at the life I used to live. Why is it that some people just suddenly have something that they can’t change? I woke up one day and just never have felt the same. Injuries that have lasted for years, a headache that likes to turn into migraines on occasion and hasn’t gone away since May, literal unknowns for days…
Recently I was reminded of the story of Job in the Bible. The beginning of the book starts with a lofty introduction of “the greatest man among all the people of the East” (Job 1:3 NIV). He had all the material possessions that determined wealth back then. He had ten children who spent time together whom Job loved them very much. But by the middle of chapter one, he had lost everything. In a single day, he lost all his possessions and all ten of his children. In Job 2, we see him go through unspeakable pain and discomfort that lasts until almost the very end of the book. And throughout it all, he never gets an answer.
I think it’s amazing how it proves that Job is faithful regardless… Job says in Chapter 2 verse 10b, “Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?” Even though everything seems against him, Job stands strong in his belief that the most important thing is where his heart lies in relation to God. Nothing of this world could tear him away from the righteousness according to God that Job devoted himself to.
And I guess that makes this the challenge… no matter if my health is doing well or poorly, where is my focus? Am I more concerned about if I can do what I want or if I am right where God wants me to be? What do we know of these things?
