My pastor said in his sermon the other day that we need to use imagination while reading the Bible, especially while reading parables. So we’re going to do that now.
After having been lost for a period of time, I suppose the sheep could have wandered far. It probably knew it was lost, likely hungry, possibly confused, assuredly tired. And we, the sinners and those who are along the wayside, we are the sheep in this passage. We have wandered away from the fold of God. We are somewhere we aren’t supposed to be.
There have been a few occasional instances where I have seen sheep on farms before. I don’t know about you, but they all look the same to me. But somehow, when the shepherd counted his sheep (I can’t even count twenty-four kids at my job and they look NOTHING alike), he knew ONE was missing. And not only that, but he knew enough about that sheep (or sheep in general) that he could go out and search for that single sheep. And find it.
And then, then the shepherd picked up the lost, and hungry, and tired sheep. The shepherd could have done the bare minimum and guided the sheep all the way home with his staff, poking and prodding him along. I’m not a shepherd, and I am sure that would have taken a lot longer, been more frustrating, but nonetheless still possible.
He was excited to take the sheep home. He was excited to get back to the other sheep that he had left behind. He was excited to celebrate.
Isaiah 40:10-11 says, “See, the Sovereign LORD comes with power, and he rules with a mighty arm. See, his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him. He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young” (NIV). We are the Lord’s flock, and when we stray, he brings us back with great rejoicing. You are carried.
