Galatians 6:2 tells us to “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ” (NIV). For a long time, I was under the assumption that meant I was always supposed to hear a person’s story the whole way through, being a good team player and completing the entire project (even if none of my team members accomplished their portion so I had to do it), and never saying no.
I have since learned that is not what it means.
For later on in the same chapter, we are told that “Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load” (Galatians 6:4-5, NIV). What does this tell us? It tells us that we need to be aware of what we are responsible for and who we are responsible to.
I have this rescuer mentality that I have been trying to fight for years now. A few months ago, I texted a friend and in tears, told him I had some friends who desperately needed prayer. I had done everything I knew how and accidentally had left God as last resort.
His reply was long, but it contained this element of truth: “I will definitely be praying… that the Lord’s presence replaces all fear and anxiety and depression. And that you get the rest you need and let Jesus bear the burdens of [your friends]. It’s only your job to carry their burdens as far as the cross, and then Jesus carries the weight when you’ve surrendered it to Him.”
Jesus tells us that, “For My yoke is easy and my burden is light,” (Matthew 11:30, NIV). What have you been struggling to take to the cross today? What are you willing to let go of so that Jesus can take over? Remember you can’t be responsible for it all, just for yourself. You are burdened.
