Day 76: You Are Welcomed

A really well-known parable is that of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-34) – a story probably seen a lot around Father’s Day. It’s one of those Bible stories that I hear a lot, and when that happens, sometimes I get calloused to the simple beauty of the meaning behind the story. Most simply, it’s a story of undeserved grace and mercy.

By demanding that the father give him his inheritance, the son is essentially saying that the relationship he has with his father isn’t valuable to him. The young man desires the money over his relationship with his father, who very clearly loves him very much. The father knows what is best for his son yet lets the young man have his way instead of forcing him to do the right thing.

Upon losing everything, the son then recollects the way that his father took care of his servants so well (vs. 17-20). The son still does not see himself as having a relationship with his father, thinking mostly of what his father still has. He then returns to his own home, hoping to be forgive enough to possibly get some food now that he had wasted his inheritance and had nothing left.

Looking at it from the father’s point of view, we know that he saw his son returning “while he was still a long way off” (vs. 20). This suggests that he was possibly waiting for him to come home, expecting that there was a restoration coming for the young man who didn’t understand what he had left behind. Whether or not that is the case, in the very least the father recognized his son regardless of what state he was in – probably hungry, tired, clothing torn.

This parable addresses how we as humans have turned away from God, set demands that we get something that isn’t best for us, and yet God lets us fight for our way. He allows us to go through hardships that we bring upon ourselves, not rescuing us or forcing us to love Him. But as soon as we turn back to God, He welcomes us with open arms. He restores the relationship we don’t deserve and gives us what is truly best.

There is so, so much more to this parable, but that is what I mainly want to focus on tonight. It’s a beautiful picture of God expecting us to return to Him so that we might live life more abundantly, walking in grace. Know that God welcomes you to His family with open arms.
