I have talked to people who said Christ transformed their lives in radical ways. I would say the same thing, but I have known who God was since I was very young, and I have developed that relationship through the years. But for those who don’t truly encounter Christ until after they are in their twenties or even later, well they live a whole lifestyle that is void of God and contrary to Christ.
So many of those who know about God later on have told me that the transformation in their lives has lifted a burden off of their shoulders. Truth being told anew so it is understood is something that touches souls and lives over and over again. It’s the renewal of the spirit.
To be renewed by the Spirit, we need to be reading our Bible. What does God have to say about the heaviness in the news day after day? What does God have to say about the heaviness in my heart and mind again and again? To be renewed by the Spirit, we need to be in prayer daily. How does my contact with the Lord reflect the chaos in my mind? How do I see the Lord reply to me?
Too often, I expect God to show up just because that’s what He’s supposed to do. But that’s not how relationship with Jesus works. The words of NF in the song “Oh Lord” comes to mind when he says, “Everyone will sleep in the pews// Then blame God for our problems like He sleeping on you// We turn our backs on Him, what do you expect Him to do?// It’s hard to answer prayers when nobody’s praying to you.” (video created by Pursuit of Music, licensed to “UMG [on behalf of Capitol CMG Label Group]; Capitol CMG Publishing”).
But being renewed happens by knowing God more and focusing on this world less. The last part of the passage I mentioned above reminds us that of our future with God some day. That fact alone can renew our minds when we remove it from our present situations. Seek God and you will find He has always been there. You are renewed.
