Day 88: You Are Receiving Best

Earlier this evening, I went berry picking with my family. As I was walking along the black raspberry bush, the very beginning seemed like there were a lot of berries everywhere. It was actually a really good start. Once I hit maybe five or six feet down the row, however, it started to piddle out until I was crouching down just to find a ripe berry here and there.

After a while, my mom suggested that we skip over a section so as to go father into the row, hoping the middle and end were less picked by others who had come before. Realizing this was a good idea, I followed my mom down the path. However, I really had to keep myself from stopping along the way to pick berries that looked really good.

And that’s when I realized that’s how we often live life. God is telling us to go somewhere or to do something, and these are things that make sense and are best. I recognize that, and so I follow where He goes. And along the way, I get distracted by other things that look just as good as where I know I’m going, believing that stopping isn’t a problem just to do that one extra thing (especially if it also helps someone else).

A really well-known passage says “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future…” (Jeremiah 29:11, NIV). What many people don’t acknowledge, however, is the context of this verse. Jeremiah writes this while Israel is under captivity and heavy oppression. They are suffering as a people. Jeremiah 29:1 says that the book addresses the “the surviving elders among the exiles and to the priests” (NIV).

The verse of hope is what follows the deep despair. And yet, God is promising something way better than what we have in mind; we have only to trust Him. Don’t get bogged down filling your time with things that look good, things that are exciting, things that are comfortable. Try to eliminate distractions from where God wants us to be. We may not always be exactly where we want to be, but we know that where God leads us to is the best place we can be.
