Day 90: You Are Yearning

For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing” (2 Timothy 4:6-8, NIV).

I love these verses because of the vivid imagery that Paul uses to describe how he is attempting to live his life for someone other than himself – he is trying to live for the glory of God. He is at peace with death looming right in front of him because he knew that he was following God. Paul says that “I have kept the faith” (vs. 7), meaning that he had done all he could to follow God and do what was asked of him.

Furthermore, Paul was not afraid of death because he knew where he was going. He knew that through Jesus, the promise of salvation was possible. He knew that by trusting in Jesus as His Lord and Savior and by living according to the Spirit, his debt had been paid. In a different epistle, Paul even wrote, “In [Jesus] and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence,” (Ephesians 3:12, NIV).

All humans have a void within us that can be fulfilled only through God Himself. There is a piece of all of us to belong to God and to honor Him, going beyond just doing basic good because we “should” do good. May we long for Heaven and our eternal home, living in a way that honors God so we have no need to fear death. We are yearning for Him.
