The Importance of The Sabbath
Tonight, my host family and I were enjoying random conversations over dinner, talking over each other when necessary and frequently interrupting each other. At one point in the evening, the family friend who had joined us for the evening said something that I had heard before, “It’s weird, you know… I so often think about Sunday as the end of a week, and not the beginning.”
There is disagreement as to whether Sunday or Monday is the first day of the week; some believe that the Lord’s Day is first and foremost so it should start the week while others suggest that Monday is first since that’s the day most work schedules reset. And yes, then there is the Biblical fact that “on the seventh day, [God] rested from all his work” (Genesis 2:2, NIV). Regardless of whether or not we go with Sunday being the first or last day of the week, we need to focus on the fact that God rested.
I am so very bad at resting.
It’s a fact that any of my friends, family, or co-workers can tell you. I move around a lot, am constantly thinking to the point of annoyance, and fiddle a lot when I am supposed to be still. I like being busy, always doing something or planning to do something. At first, I thought it was because I never wanted to claim the common words, “I am bored,” but now I think I really just don’t want to be the definition of boring.
Adventure is one word that has always captivated my soul, and I want to be in it and creating it wherever I go. To be busy, to be on the move, is to be exciting. My friends have often teased me about being predictable, but at the same time, I am extremely spontaneous. To me, fun things can be completely out of nowhere and can take even me by surprise. Maybe I just surprise myself, I don’t know.
Being busy, however, means that I don’t have the ability to sit still. It takes away from my time to reset and focus on the things that are important to me, like priorities in work and school. Or the most important thing, listening to what God has to say to me. Rest is about rejuvenating the mind and soul, not just the physical body.
While under the guidance of a sweet and dear mentor of mine from college, a group of friends and I were retaught the simple phrase “honor the Sabbath.” What she meant by that was taking that day to follow that which our LORD demonstrated for us the very day after man was created. He showed us how we ought to be living, and yet we don’t.
I need a mental reset. And more importantly, I need a spiritual reset. Ever since I had this reminder, a lot in my life changed. What does a Sabbath actually look like?
- I refuse to work on this day; my work week can start on Monday. I am willing to schedule job hours of any day of the week, even Saturday. Saturday is great and all since I know I don’t have classes, but it is a day I can work. I am willing to do what I need to as long as Sunday, which is not a day I work, is free. Work is not taking a break. Work is not taking a Sabbath.
- I will not do any homework unless I have an assignment that is due “tomorrow” that I have managed not to do while attending to my amazing procrastination skills. But in all honesty, when I made my Sabbath an actual Sabbath, it became a priority. Priorities have a way of not being forgotten and not being pushed into an “I can procrastinate on this” category. No, the procrastination can work around that.
- Fellowship. This is so much more important than the act of going to church with people and then driving home at the end. Part of going to church is in fact listening to a sermon spoken by one person for one hour. But a congregation of God’s people singing the same words, agreeing in unison about the power of Christ, declaring truth… that is so powerful. Also, discussing the sermon afterward and letting God’s Word change you is essential for growth. I often eat lunch with the people I went to church with, and asking questions and reflecting on what we’ve heard and learned is a great way to dig deeper in our own spiritual lives as well as grow closer to each other.
- I only listen to Christian music. Hymns, Christian pop, and everything in between. It doesn’t mean I’ll plug my ears when I walk by someone else playing a non-Christian song. And by no means do I discourage anyone else from listening to non-Christian music. It’s just if I sit down and decide to listen to music on my phone or on the radio or YouTube, I put on a Christian station or playlist. Don’t get me wrong, I listen to secular music all the time, and maybe I’ll write a post on that later. However, as a spiritual reset, listening solely to Christian music helps me with my perspective.
When I created a haven for re-centering my life around God, a radical change occurred in my life. It’s not like all of my problems went away. To a certain degree, I think that sometimes I may have faced my temptations to actually stray from my Sabbath. However, my problems were put into a healthier perspective; issues in my life are no longer so easily blown out of proportion.
And although I have chosen Sunday to be the day that I take a break from the craziness of life, I don’t believe that Sunday has to be the day you take a break. It can be any day of the week, any general 24 hours where the heart decides that its focus is on God. Yes, our focus should never stray from God. He is, after all, constantly with us no matter where we go and no matter what we do. However, when all of your concentration on Christ, a lot in your heart and mind can change.
If you are in Christ, then I encourage you from one Believer to another, find your Sabbath. Know what is important, and make it a priority. Make your day with God special to both your relationship with Christ as well as your relationship with Family members.
