Tonight during the evening service at my grandparents’ church, our pastor was going through Exodus 17 talking about how the Israelites walked with God. The Book of Exodus is riddled with different instances and examples of how God’s people failed Him again and again, and yet that never changed how good God was to them.
The way our pastor put it was this: “Doubting the Lord’s faithfulness was outrageously unfaithful of them because God had already proven His faithfulness to them over and over.” The idea of this statement was that when we feel like things aren’t going so well, when we are figuratively lost in the wilderness, tired and hungry, thirsty with no water around, we are likely to complain. And while complaining, we fail to look back on our lives and remember the countless blessings God has given to us to show us His presence and prove His faithfulness.
I had this crazy realization today that God could have just sent Jesus to the earth to live, die, and rise again. And then left Salvation at that. We know He created Adam and Eve with free will (Genesis 3:2-3). We know that He chose the Israelites to be His holy people (Genesis 12). We know He created a way for the Israelites to atone for their sins (Leviticus 6-7). But Jesus was the ultimate atonement for sin that cancelled the need for the Temple’s daily sacrifices, allowed more people to become God’s holy nation, and gave us the option to follow Him.
And then God did even more – He sent us the Holy Spirit. The Bible tells us that “he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:6b, NIV). God has been so faithful; may we not lose sight of that. The Holy Spirit allows us to return that faithfulness through His power. You are faithful.
